Jarissa Maselyne (EV ILVO, coordinator aWISH) represented the aWISH project, as well as the Clearfarm project, and gave a presentation entitled “Guidelines to validate sensor output of animal-based measurements”, during which the importance of valid and reliable measurements given by the sensors and the relevance of the measured data was discussed, in order to effectively use sensor data for welfare monitoring. A guideline from the aWISH and Clearfarm projects outlines a standardized sensor validation protocol in two blocks: (1) output validation, ensuring the sensor measures accurately, and (2) welfare relevance validation, determining if the data can effectively indicate animal
welfare. This presentation focused mainly on block 1, which includes different steps: (1) description of the sensor output, (2) determination of the gold standard and reference output, (3) determination of sample size and statistical analysis, (4) limitations of the technology.
