This annual regional event brought together researchers from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing on animal welfare across a variety of species. As a more local and intimate lead-up to the upcoming ISAE Congress in Utrecht in August 2025, the conference provided a dynamic platform for engaging discussions and innovative ideas.
The aWISH project was well-represented by Bas Rodenburg (UU), Frank Tuyttens (EV ILVO – UGent), and Kenny van Langeveld (EV ILVO – UGent). Kenny’s presentation showcased promising preliminary findings on the inter- and intra-observer reliability (IOR) of raters scoring tear stains in pigs using video footage captured during the Dutch pilot (Vion). The presentation sparked a stimulating discussion, with one attendee suggesting automated systems as a potential solution to improve IOR. This exchange provided a valuable opportunity to highlight aWISH’s cutting-edge work, including the development of a tear-staining sensor in the Spanish pilot (Battalé), which aims to advance precision animal welfare monitoring.
The conference also featured several compelling presentations from researchers across the region. Femke Delanglez (EV ILVO – UGent) discussed the welfare, ergonomic, and economic impacts of different broiler-catching methods, while Fleur Veldkamp (WUR) presented findings on the inclusion of former food products in pig diets and their implications for performance and welfare. Yeshwas Ferede Alemu (Bahir Dar University) explored calf morbidity and mortality in Ethiopian smallholder dairy farms, offering a global perspective on animal welfare challenges.
To round out the event, attendees enjoyed a relaxing walk through the woods accompanied by alpacas, adding a lighter, enjoyable element to the day. The ISAE Benelux Conference once again demonstrated its value in promoting collaboration, innovation, and progress in the field of animal welfare.
