Agriflanders provided an excellent platform to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including colleagues, farmers, partners, journalists, suppliers, policymakers, and politicians. The work of ILVO captivated a broad audience, sparking interest and discussion about the future of agriculture and precision livestock farming.
Joris Relaes, head of ILVO, facilitated discussions with several key policymakers, including:
- Jo Brouns, Flemish minister of environment and Agriculture.
- Ben Weyts, Deputy prime minister of the Flemish government and Minister of budget and finance, the Flemish periphery, immovable heritage, and animal welfare.
- Hilde Crevits, Deputy prime minister and Flemish minister of home affairs, urban and rural policy, social cohesion, integration, administrative affairs, social economy, and sea fisheries.
- Jinni Beels, the new provincial deputy for agriculture in Antwerp, Belgium.
- Joke Schauvliege: the new deputy for agriculture and rural affairs in East Flanders.
These policymakers showed a keen interest in the aWISH project, recognizing its potential for innovation in the sector.
To emphasize the technological and AI-driven aspects of aWISH, the advanced prototype Stremodo was showcased. Developed by the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN), this cutting-edge device detects stress vocalizations in pigs, providing a revolutionary tool to monitor and enhance animal welfare.
aWISH is a European project, focused on automated animal welfare monitoring for broilers and pigs. The main objective of aWISH is to develop and offer the capacity to evaluate and improve the welfare of meat-producing livestock throughout Europe via automated monitoring of animal-based welfare indicators at the slaughterhouse in order to give feedback and advice on best practices to those responsible for the various stages of production (farmer, catching team, transporter, slaughterhouse). This approach will be developed and evaluated in close collaboration with all actors involved, from primary producers up to policy makers and citizens.
Currently a European initiative, but the aWISH project is exploring the possibility of launching a Flemish pilot.
If you see opportunities for partnership or wish to contribute to the rollout of aWISH in Flanders, please don’t hesitate to contact us at awish@ilvo.vlaanderen.be or through the aWISH website https://www.awish-project.eu/.
